My Travel Highlights of 2017

Its been four months since I left Ireland to begin my travels around the world. When I think back over everything I’ve done, it feels like it’s been years rather than months. Swimming with sharks in the Great Barrier Reef, hitchhiking from Mission Beach to Cairns and riding a Harley Davidson at 80 mph looking for kangaroos in 1770 seems like it happened last year when really it was only a few weeks ago.

It’s funny how when you’re travelling, you travel in phases. The first stage of my travels started in Cuba with my Dad and my sister where we immersed ourselves in history, salsa and mojitos for two weeks. Touring around Havana, Trinidad and Santa Clara really opened my eyes to the kindness and openness of Cuban locals despite the poverty many of them dwell in. I would love to return someday and volunteer to help not just the people but also the large amounts of stray dogs who roam the streets with no food or shelter.

The next phase of my travels took me to New South Wales in Australia after a gruelling 46 hours of travelling from Havana to Sydney Airport. After getting quarantined in Sydney airport, being questioned about the “hidden” 500 grams of Amber Leaf in my rucksack (25 grams is the limit) and paying $350 to border control so I could keep it, my backpacking adventure began.

I travelled from Sydney all the way up to Cairns stopping at every town along the way with my travel buddy, Egle. We did as many excursions as our budget would allow, stayed in dorms with up to 20 other people and made a bunch of lifelong friends from all around the world. My personal highlights were exploring Fraser Island, sailing around the Whitsunday Islands and snorkelling in the Great Barrier Reef.

I am so excited to see what 2018 brings me and I can’t wait to share it with you.
